the timeline

Le Gharbáj

After having already started production on a different commercial, Annmarie, Hannah, and I took a step back and realized what we were working on was not worthwhile and went back to the drawing board. I pitched a goofy idea I had a year or two ago about a gross perfume called "le gharbáj" (a fancy way of saying garbage) and it took from there we got working. I knew the vision I had for the b-roll footage: the bottle of perfume spinning and glistening/glowing with light. In order to achieve this, we had to improvise. The set up we came up with was a stroke of genius. Annmarie brought in the spinning tray from her microwave, and we found a piece of wood with a small hole in the center. I turned on my iPhone flashlight and placed it so the light perfectly shined through the hole in the wooden block and we placed the glass perfume bottle on top. We then found a water spritzer and put it in the mist mode to make a smokey/hazy effect. The end result was sexy, to say the least. We did come across a major roadblock with this project, however. Muench showed us an advertisement from last semester for a bad-smelling perfume. The idea was too close for comfort and we had to adjust and make ours more centered around the ingredients and making of the perfume to separate ourselves better, but in the end, it worked out quite well.
